SQUARE COMPETITION IN ELEFSINA

The axis of the real: The characteristics of the site of the intervention emanate from the overlapping of two different snapshots of the city, the simultaneous presence of Iera Odos and the grid of the modern city.

The historicity of the present layout and its systematic occupation have contributed to the formation of its identity from fragmentary spaces resulting from the coexistence of the axonality of the Iera Odos with Iroon Square.

However, the end of the Iera Odos is unable to take on its symbolic function, since the widening of the square significantly alters its axiality.

The axis of the imaginary: The aim of this proposal is to give substance to the structural autonomous elements of the site.

It is thus rendered in its components by an ideogram: a line-thread on the Iera Odos and a quadrilateral on Iroon Square.

For the spatial relationship that will form the separation of the two spatial conditions, the third dimension was used: height.

The correlation of the two components, the axis and the square, results from the point degradation of the square with a height difference of 2 meters.

On the south side of the square, at the point where the conflict between the components is maximised, an articulation element is proposed to enrich the use of the existing pavilion: the gazebo.

The church of St. Zacharias and its precinct were perceived as an autonomous atmosphere.

On the west side of the precinct a plateau – balcony is added, a boundary that allows the diffusion of the special atmosphere of the church into a piece of purely public space.
